Giardia

What is Giardia?

Giardia is a tiny parasite that causes the diarrheal disease called Giardiasis.

Where is Giardia found?

Giardia is found on surfaces or in soil, food, or water that has been contaminated with poop from infected people or animals. Giardia can also be found in dog or cat poop.

How does a pet get Giardiasis?

  • Being in contact with infected poop
  • Rolling or playing in contaminated soil
  • Licking the body after being in an infected crate or litter pan
  • Drinking water from a contaminated creek, pond, puddle, or other body of water.
  • Keep the pet on a leash where there is danger of drinking from a puddle, etc.

Can humans get Giardiasis from their pets?

  • The risk is relatively low, but it can happen.
  • Wash hands with soap and water after handing poop or handling your pet.

Symptoms of Giardia infection

  • Diarrhea that does not go away
  • Gas
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

What is the treatment for Giardiasis?

  • The diagnosis must be made at a veterinary clinic.
  • Follow the veterinarian’s treatment and recommendations.
  • Metronidazole is the most used treatment. Metronidazole is an antibiotic and an antiprotozoal (Kills/inhibits the growth of organisms) medication.

How do I protect or eliminate Giardia from the pet’s environment after diagnosis?

  • Giardia can be passed through the poop sporadically and the animal may seem healthy, so ongoing poop tests are necessary.
  • Remove poop from the yard by using a bag and throwing it away.
  • Remove standing water in the yard.
  • Limit time in parks, etc. if the pet is being treated for Giardiasis.
  • If there are other dogs and cats in the home be sure to ask the veterinarian for advice.
  • Bathe all pets with shampoo to ensure there is no poop on the coat.
  • Clean the environment with soap and water.
  • Clean bowls, crates, etc. daily with soap and water until there is a clear fecal sample.
  • Dishwasher safe toys and bowls can be cleaned in the dishwasher.
  • Bedding and cloth toys should be washed and dried at the highest setting for at least 30 minutes each to disinfect.
