The basis for skin and coat diets are the omega fatty acids. Only lenoleic and arachadonic fatty acids are recognized as dietary essentials, both are omega 6’s. Omega 3 fatty acids are extremely beneficial in reducing the inflammation associated with skin conditions such as allergic dermatitis. Flax, canola, and the oils from these seeds, along with fish oils, hemp seed oil, and phytoplankton, are very good sources of omega 3 fatty acids. In addition to omega 3 fatty acids “healthy coat” systems usually include the essential vitamins A and E, also the essential mineral zinc. Products promoting “formulated for healthy skin and coat” have become a popular marketing ploy for many pet food companies. Many companies will include only the required Omega 6’s as they are less expensive, but they are less effective if not combined with Omega 3’s in the proper 9:1 ratio.
