Dental Health is Key to Long Term Health for Pets as it is for Their Guardians

Dental or oral health is as important for our beloved pets as it is for ourselves. Humans spend significant time, effort, and expense to support dental health. We brush and floss daily and regularly visit the dentist for proper cleaning below the gum line. Our pets deserve some of the same consideration.

Dogs and cats in the wild are predators and scavengers. Which means, they rip and chew on flesh, bones, and skin, keeping their teeth and gums clean and healthy. Our domestic dog and cat eat differently, so proper consideration must be given to oral hygiene.

Dental disease begins early in life. It has been estimated that most dogs and cats over the age of three have some degree of dental disease. If allowed to progress, gums become infected, teeth loosen in the bone and invite conditions that affect the whole body. In addition, dental and gum disease is painful, and while our pets are tough, it does lower their quality of life.

Regular annual veterinary visits are essential for a pet’s long-term oral and whole-body health. Guardians must also commit some of the same time and effort at home for their pet’s oral health as they give to themselves to protect the pet.

Veterinary dental cleaning and the more severe conditions that occur when oral health is neglected are costly and can have severe effects on a pet’s long-term health and quality of life. Starting early at home to protect oral health and slow the natural disease process with cost-effective and common-sense measures can assure a long, happy life and save money at the same time.
